Former Clackmannanshire heidie and former Educational Institute of Scotland president John Patton was introduced at a recent meeting as “a former young teacher from Africa”.

Another of the Wee County’s luminaries recalled his own experience of Patton. “We frequently sat across the table from each other and I regularly suppressed the urge to call him many things - but never a young teacher from Africa,” quipped Keir Bloomer, the council’s never-lost-for-words chief executive
