Class sizes are “yesterday’s issue” and the debate will be overtaken by more flexible learning, accelerated by new technology, Keir Bloomer, director of education in Clackmannan, said. The evidence for smaller classes was not “incontrovertible”, a view shared by Professor Brown, who said size mattered only if classes were “unrealistically small”.

Professor Brown said it would be a mistake to argue all classes should be a particular size.
