I call this game Latin baseball because I use it in classics but it could be adapted to any subject. Say you have a class of 20. You could create four groups of five pupils. Arrange one group around the outside of the classroom (the rest sit down and must remain quiet). You then fire questions at the group that is standing up. For example, I might say the Latin word “servus” expecting the answer “slave”. The first student who gives the correct answer moves round in a clockwise direction. If there is someone standing there that person sits down. It takes about two minutes to find a winner for the first group and then the next takes over.

After the four heats, there is the final, which produces a winner. It makes a good five to 10-minute end-of-lesson activity.
