The hands of a clock can divide into two sets of numbers.

At 1.52: one set is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, which have a total of 24.

At what time will the two sets of numbers have equal totals?

SOLUTION

Clock face

The total of all the numbers on the clock face is 78, so each half must have a total of 39. This happens when one hand is between 3 and 4, and the other hand between 9 and 10, eg 9:18 or 3:48.
