North Lanarkshire education convener Charles Gray has called for tighter vetting of school trips after Dover customs seized Pounds 500,000 worth of cannabis from a coach carrying Scottish pupils.
The 46 children and six teachers, from Greenfaulds High in Cumbernauld, were returning from a visit to Maastricht in Holland. Customs officers found 330lb of drugs in five suitcases in the luggage hold.
Bus driver Frank Alvey, 42, from Hemlington, Middlesbrough, has been charged with illegally importing drugs.
Mr Gray said: “Bus companies are going to have to look closely at how they vet their employees and if any are caught doing something like this they should get the maximum penalty possible.”
