John Steele (“Create a gold standard for school sport”, Comment, 23 April) suggests ways in which primary schools may best make use of the new funding for sport available to them. Another idea with considerable potential is collaboration between primary and independent schools. Many independents, particularly senior schools, are fortunate in their facilities and coaching expertise. Indeed, many Olympic athletes - past, present and future - are employed by these schools. It would be an effective way for primary students to receive outstanding coaching in ideal circumstances if their institutions worked in partnership with local independents. Many Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference schools have such projects in place and more would be ready to collaborate in this way.

John Claughton, Chairman, HMC sports committee.
