A survey (FE Focus, page 30) shows that average increases amount to 2. 9 per cent but range from nil to the 5 per cent awarded at Edinburgh's Telford College in two stages.
At Langside in Glasgow, lecturers accepted a pay freeze in return for five days' extra holiday following a cut in the college's Scottish Office grant.
Management offers have been rejected by lecturers at six of the colleges, and there is a ballot on a pay and conditions package at Fife College.
The wide discrepancies have led the Educational Institute of Scotland to support a return to collective agreements, if not nationally then by groups of colleges.
Marion Healy, the union's further and higher education officer, said that the burden of time-consuming negotiations should be lifted from the shoulders of individual principals and union branches.
