Peers have backed a move to give extra powers to the planned children’s commissioner, causing a government defeat in the House of Lords. The Liberal Democrat amendment to the Children Bill was supported by the Conservatives and carried by 114 votes to 93.
The amendment would empower the commissioner to help a child bring legal proceedings, if no one else can provide such support, and give him or her an independent role protecting young people’s human rights.
