Community education in East Dunbartonshire is 60 per cent underfunded, with only eight professional workers to cover a wide remit, the council has revealed.
The council’s education committee was told last week that the budget inherited from the former Strathclyde Region was Pounds 812,000, but based on population two-and-a-half times that amount is needed.
Ron McInally, East Dunbartonshire’s education convener, said: “There is a need for additional funding to ensure that the service develops quickly to meet the needs of the community.”
The council has also expressed unhappiness about pre-five provision. There are only 200 council places and more than 2,000 are needed, according to Mr McInally.
