6 BILLION AND ONE

This United Nations-backed writing competition aims to increase awareness among 15 to 18-year-olds of the need to control population growth - world population has increased six-fold this century to 6 billion. Organisers Marie Stopes International and Population Concern are inviting students to write letters of up to 300 words to Prime Minister Tony Blair asking for Government support for concerted international action to guarantee reproductive and sexual health rights for all. Student winners and their teachers will visit a developing country next summer to see family planning programmes in action. Details: Catherine Bartley, PC, tel: 0171 631 1546; e-mail: press@populationconcern.org.uk
