CLORE PLAYGROUND OF THE YEAR. The National Playing Fields Association and the Clore Foundation are offering playground equipment worth Pounds 1,500 to the person, group or organisation nominating the winning entry. Judges will consider overall design, safety, level of fun and how the playground caters for children with disabilities. Closing date: June 30. SOCIAL SCIENCES LESSON PLANS

The Association for the Teaching of the Social Sciences is inviting current teacher trainees in the subject to send in their most successful lesson plans by June 30. First prize is Pounds 75 and publication in Social Science Teacher, second prize is Pounds 50 and third prize Pounds 25. All winners receive a year’s free membership. BOOTS OPTICIANS’ YOUNG JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR

Sight Savers International is inviting young people aged 12-15 and 16-18 to submit a 1,500-word article by July 5 on “Restoring the miracle of sight”. A trip to India to see SSI projects is first prize for the older category and first prize in the other age group is Pounds 500. National Council for the Training of Journalists’ training packages will go to the top three in each category. Winners will receive their awards from ITV newsreader Trevor McDonald and see the ITN newsroom in action.

In a new group category, SSI and youth charity, Christmas Cracker, are encouraging young people to produce and sell their own newspaper, The Cracker, for the chance of winning Pounds 1,000 and other cash awards. Deadline: December 31. For resource packs and information, telephone 01444 412424.
