FORD CREST AWARDS: AUTOMOTIVATION. Secondary and sixth-form students are being encouraged to come up with original ideas involving either the development and manufacture of cars or their effect on the environment. Top prize is a Ford Transit Minibus worth Pounds 23,000 plus. Previous gold award winners have designed a car with low air resistance and a way of making trailers less vulnerable to theft. THE RIBA ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION AWARD

The winner of this category in the Royal Institute of British Architects annual awards goes on to compete with other category winners for the Pounds 20,000 Stirling Prize for the Building of the Year. Buildings must have been completed between January 1, 1994 and April 11, 1997, and be designed by a RIBA member. Judging takes place over the summer. Building nominations should be sent to: RIBA Awards Office, Birmingham and Midlands Institute, Margaret Street, Birmingham B3 3SP.
