The British Airport Authority is challenging Young Engineers’ Club members aged 15 years upwards to monitor how their school or college uses such resources and energy as heating, lighting and paper. They should identify areas where waste is generated, suggest practical improvements, devise a workable “environmental policy” and prepare a report and presentation. Closing date for registration: March 27. Overall national winners will receive pound;1,000 to buy equipment for their YE club and spend an all-expenses paid week during the October half-term at Stansted Airport. T E UTLEY MEMORIAL AWARDS
Aspiring journalists still at school or university are invited to provide two extracts (totalling not more than 1,200 words) from an imaginary debate: one speaker attacking the millennial celebrations as so many feeble-minded delusions, the other defending them as symbols of latter-day Christian hope. Closing date: April 20. The “School” award is pound;1,500, the “University” award is pound;2,500 and one or both winners may have their entry published in The Spectator.
