Celtic Connections Children's Concert Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow October 1, 7pm A celebration of the work of the Celtic Connections education programme, featuring Glasgow school pupils and traditional musicians from Scotland and Rostov-on-Don.

Royal Concert Hall, tel 0141 353 8000 Making Friends with Frankenstein Queen's Hall, Edinburgh October 6, 2.30pm An adaptation of Colin McNaughton's book of monster stories in which about 100 Edinburgh primary children will join the BT Scottish Ensemble and soprano Mhairi Lawson. The composer of the music, Fraser Trainer, will present the show. Ben Parry, director of the Dunedin Consort, will conduct the performance. Children are invited to make scary monster masks to wear to the concert.

Queen's Hall, tel 0131 668 2019 Laboratory Music Projects Kelso High School, Scottish Borders October 24, 7.30pm The Laboratory Music Projects were launched this month by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Eight musicians from the SCO are working with 20 young folk and traditional musicians in the Scottish Borders and the initiative will culminate in this free public concert.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra Education, tel 0131 557 6802 Rhythms of the North Eden Court Theatre, Inverness November 12, 7.30pm The annual schools extravaganza jointly presented by Eden Court Theatre's outreach team and Highland Council's education department. The concert focuses on non-classical projects in Highland schools, taking in rock and pop bands, folk and jazz.

Eden Court Theatre, tel 01463 234234 TES Scotland Schools Gala Concert Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow November 14, 7pm Paul Rissmann, music animateur with several Scottish orchestras, presents six youth groups from across Scotland in this annual celebration of music in schools. Taking part are the West of Scotland and East Ayrshire schools concert bands, the East Renfrewshire Schools Senior String Orchestra, North Lanarkshire Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Perth and Kinross Fiddles and the Waverley Singers from Edinburgh.

Royal Concert Hall, tel 0141 353 8000 RSNO Christmas Project Magnum Centre, Ayr December 3 This concert is a culmination of a Royal Scottish National Orchestra Christmas project in which RSNO musicians will work with selected North Ayrshire schools to create new music for existing carols. These will be performed along with other Christmas music.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra Education, tel 0141 225 3552 Christmas Concerts Southside Queen's Hall, Edinburgh December 16, 11.30am and 7.30pm Carols December 18, 7.30 pm In celebration of the season, the orchestra of Liberton High School, in Edinburgh, gives two Christmas concerts and, two days later, Ben Parry, director of the Dunedin Consort, conducts carols and seasonal songs with pupils from four local primary schools, with audience participation.

Queen's Hall, tel 0131 668 2019 NYOS New Year Concerts Usher Hall, Edinburgh January 3, 7.30pm Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow January 4, 7.30pm Sian Edwards will be this season's conductor for the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland's annual New Year concerts. The demanding programme has an eastern European theme, featuring Stravinsky's Song of the Nightingale, Syzmanowski's Violin Concerto No 1 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 6.

National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, tel 0141 332 8311 Wild and Wicked Eden Court Theatre, Inverness January 18, 3pm The Royal Scottish National Orchestra presents an all-action children's concert programme, with music by Arnold, Grieg, Beethoven, Mozart and Danny Elfman's theme from The Simpsons. Children are invited to bring their own instruments and play in an audience participation section; practice sheets are available in advance from the theatre.
