Conditions not cash repel recruits

PAYING salaries to some trainees teachers is likely to have only a marginal effect on recruitment.

The major cause of poor recruitment is inadequate working conditions, coupled with the lack of esteem accorded to teachers by successive governments.

A mentor of mine used to say that Conservativ governments regard teachers as potentially subversive upstarts from the working class, while Labour regards teachers as renegades from the working class who should not be rewarded for their treachery.
