* The responsibility of being a scientist is to be the theme of the annual Festival of Science organised by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. It will be held at Exeter University, September 6-10.

* The Royal Society’s annual Summer Science Exhibition will be held at 6 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1, July 6-8. Visitors can try the hands-on exhibits and meet leading scientific researchers. Post-16 students considering a scientific career are particularly welcome. Free entry, but early registration is necessary for schoolcollege groups. Registered students receive a free education pack. * What are the genetics behind the Scottish look of red hair and freckles? Find out at the “Life’s What You Make It” show for secondary pupils featured in the 2004 Scottish Schools Touring Programme run by the Edinburgh International Science Festival. A team of actors and science communicators is visiting schools until June 11 to inspire more than 60,000 pupils aged five to 14 with a passion for science through shows such as Dr Bunhead’s Exploding Kitchen Show. Themes are: living things; earth and space; energy and forces; and technology. The programme is sponsored by Discovery Channel.
