“Creating opportunities” will be the theme of Language World, the Association for Language Learning’s annual conference at the University of Kent, Canterbury, July 1-3. New this year is a “Celebration Area”, highlighting excellent work being carried out in schools. Free entry to resources exhibition.

CILT, the National Centre for Languages’ Primary Languages Show and free resources exhibition will be held at the Palace Hotel, Manchester, March 11-12. Other CILT events include: French day for primary teachers, Spennymoor, County Durham, February 24, London, March 2, pound;60, pound;50 members; Italian day for primary teachers, London, March 1; Modern foreign languages at KS3, Exeter, March 14, pound;75pound;65; German improvement days, London, February 23 and March 9, pound;60 pound;50; Getting started with ICT in Punjabi and Urdu, Bradford College, March 4, pound;100pound;90.

CILT also administers the European Award for Languages, which recognises creative, motivating language-learning initiatives. Closing date for applications:March 18.

CILT courses abroad are funded by British Council Comenius 2.2 grants, which cover most of the costs. Courses include: French for the primary school, July 24-30, St Omer France; Spanish for the primary school, May 29-June 4, Tordesillas, Valldolid, Spain; Spanish for the secondary school, May 29-June 11, Universidad Publica de Navarra, Pamplona; Italiano alla fiorentina, October 20-29, British Institute, Florence; Berlin Aktuell, March 17-25, Goethe Institut Berlin; German for the primary school, October 23-29, SchwAbisch Hall, Germany. Fees: 1,400-1,700 euros.

“Learning languages in the primary school”, a British Council Seminars event for those developing MFL projects around the world, will be held in Liverpool, February 20-25. Topics include: approaches to initial and continuing teacher education; and transition from primary to secondary education assessment. Fee: pound;1,350 residential.
