A convert to rustic comfort

It's an immutable law that holds as good for teachers as for children: no matter how bad the summer (and this one was the worst in more than a decade), the sun always shines when it's time to go back to school. If you suffered from rain at home or in Europe, you can always hope for better times at half-term.

At the time of going to press, Classic Cottages had more than 100 properties of all sizes on its books with half-term availability. Imagine the long walks by the beach or through the rustling leaves, then back for tea by the fire.

Despite the company's name, several of its properties did not start life as cottages. The Old Chapel has been converted from its 19th-century origins into a two-bedroom (both en suite) first-floor apartment, sleeping four. It's situated in the village of Mullion, on the Lizard peninsula, within day-trip distance of many of Cornwall's attractions, such as the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Land's End and the Tate Gallery at St Ives. A week's stay from October 18 or 25 is pound;403.
