According to a recent news story, British children have trouble identifying common vegetables. So the arrival of an attractive new food magazine is timely. Cook School, supported by the Royal Society for the Arts and Waitrose, will be published every term. The 56-page first issue begins, appropriately, with A is for Apple, a colourful and informative guide to many varieties and aspects of the fruit. Other sections cover political issues such as organic farming, and bring out the nutritional aspects of a culturally diverse range of festivals. Celebrity chefs contribute, and the magazine is supported by a website from which recipes and classroom materials can be downloaded. Cook School is free to schools registered with the Focus on Food campaign at Design Dimension, Dean Clough, Halifax HX3 5AX.
