Nearly one in three schools built with the Government’s private finance initiative do not have a kitchen to cook fresh meals. Unison, the public services union, said many catering staff in the 417 PFI schools had only scissors and tongs, which they use for re-heating previously-cooked food.

Following a campaign by TV chef Jamie Oliver, Education Secretary Ruth Kelly announced a pound;200 million investment package for improving catering in schools.
