MOVE over Max Boyce, miners and male voice choirs - Wales is where it’s at these days and staff and students at Carmarthenshire College are starting a society to celebrate their newly trendy nationality, writes Harvey McGavin.

According to the college, the land of daffodils, dragons and devolution is becoming known as Cool Cymru, following the international success of actress Catherine Zeta Jones, opera star Bryn Terfel and pop groups such as Stereophonics, the Manic Street Preachers an Catatonia.

Cerith Davies, student services coordinator at the college, is helping to set up the society, which will organise social and cultural events for Welsh and non-Welsh-speakers alike.

He said: “We have more to shout about in Wales than we have had for a while - apart from the rugby, that is. Still, people think of us in Wales as choirs and mining communities. We do suffer a bit from having a low profile. But ... there is a new period of confidence as a nation.”
