The Diary would like to apologise for last week’s item about Coronation Street’s Ken Barlow’s re-entry into teaching.

We suggested schools might be reluctant to take a 60-something with a criminal record and proven taste for affairs with parents. But Jane Bailey, deputy head at Buile Hill high in Ken’s locality of Salford, says he would be an improvement on some supply staff on offer (putting them in front of a class feels like “feeding fish to penguins”, she says). “He knows the area, has a pulse (and) looks vaguely normal,” she enthuses.
