Count with Maisy is one of the shiniest and brightest of the new shiny, bright set of book charts from Walker (Pounds 2.99 each). Lucy Cousins’s amiable mouse potters through 10 colour fields to establish 10 numbers. These and several more in the series are perfect for nursery or reception walls: John Burningham illustrates Colours, Helen Oxenbury Action Words, Ian Beck the ABC and Flora McDonnell Animals.

Two for the walls of the infant school library are excerpts from Edward Lear’s The Owl and the Pussycat and Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. The Owl and the Pussycat, illustrated by Louise Voce, uses some splendidly mad images to capture the essence of the poem. Covetable.
