“The project will help pupils use real and relevant data as a source for information handling as well as looking at social trends over time through previous census data,” says Mr Randall. “It will help young people understand why it is important to society that the dta is collected.”
The Schools Census Project is Internet based (www.gro-scotland.gov.uk), accompanied by a workbook, and aims to give eight to 14-year-olds access to data covering all 32 local authorities and national statistics. Exercise topics, covering mathematics, environmental studies and information and communications technology skills, include rural depopulation, the increase in lone parent families, ethnic origins and occupational changes.
