A number of authorities are working with the CES software company in Edinburgh to “grow” their own software for planning and booking CPD.

CEBAS (course events booking and adminstration system) is the program used by Stirling Council to provide teachers with the electronic system they wanted for viewing and booking opportunities.

Bob McGowan, service manager for staff development, says the council wanted a system that would be flexible. It contains all Stirling’s own courses (300-plus) and carries information on all its schools and teachers in terms of CPD records. An events calendar, search facility to find events, delegate history and staff forms are all there too, plus information about social work courses.

Stirling schools have used the CES system for four years, says Mr McGowan.

It appealed because “they could respond to a principled approach of evolution rather than providing a ready-made package”.

Midlothian is now looking at adding a newly developed module that lets teachers track their own training records online. It hopes to have the system up and running for the next session.
