Barbara Ball, professional officer for the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, will be runing a number of inset courses across the country, including “teaching numeracy using developing number 2” and “teaching mathematics using ICT”. Existing courses include: teaching through problems, not exercises; developing mathematical thinking; using dynamic geometry systems to develop geometrical understanding; developing teachers’

www.atm.org.ukcourses Paper folding is an entertaining way to learn maths, particularly geometric aspects such as making Islamic patterns using squares, triangles and polygons or folding a pyramid from an envelope. In her lecture, “Be a paper mathemagician”, Liz Meenan, from Leeds University, will show primary pupils aged seven to nine all this and more. Venue: Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, October 5, 2.30-3.30pm. Free admission but by ticket only.
