Those who Reid the signs in further education are having a field day with speculation on the recent advertisement for a principal of Bell College of Technology in Hamilton.

John Reid is retiring with one task incomplete: the college failed to become Lanarkshire University. But Reid will go down in history as a principal with a unique insight into staff relations. Apart from excessive zeal to find the moles who were leaking his more exotic pronouncements to the media, his finest dictum was his sophisticated definition of staff development.

Seasoned Bell staff say it went like this: “OK, I’m like an eagle circling above a field and you down there are like a herd of cows looking up to see what the eagle is doing. When the eagle tells you to get your heads down, you get them down.”

He will be a hard act to follow.
