Crazy design

I challenged my Year 6 class to design and build a "crazy golf" course in the playground. We used hockey sticks and tennis balls instead of golf clubs and balls. We didn't dig holes in the playground - we used cones, which had to be struck by the ball to complete the hole. The cones had paper flags taped to the top to indicate the number of the hole.

The class was divided into nine groups. Each group was given a selection of PE equipment and asked to build a "crazy golf" hole. They then spent a short session in the playground testing their designs, which included tunnels, bridges, ramps and jumps. Slalom sections were created using cones, bunkers were made using stacks of hoops and out-of-bounds areas were made with ropes.

Before playing the course each group drew a plan of their hole, giving hints for a low score, labelling hazards, stating par and pointing out where penalty strokes would be incurred. The plans were photocopied and stapled into booklets before being distributed for the final session, when the students got to play in their own Year 6 open championship.

The children had to keep and check their own scorecards, giving the number of shots and strokes above and below par (a practical exploration into negative numbers).
