THE Office for Standards in Education is advertising for a “director of early years” on pound;85,000. The postholder’s duties will include implementing “a new national framework for the quality of early years childcare and education”.

You might think that the holder of such a high-profile position would need some early-years experience - apparently not! The requirements listed in the adverisements include “management experience” and “leadership skills” but nothing about childcare or inspections.

How will the new director be able to “establish credibility with the early education and social care sector” without such experience?
