A drive to boost state school pupils’ interest in cricket was launched this week by Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England.

The Chance to Shine campaign aims to raise pound;50 million to bring competitive cricket to 5,200 primary and 1,500 secondary schools in the next 10 years. Figures suggest that less than 10 per cent of state school pupils take part in cricket competions.
