Yet more papal news. The outcome of the conclave in Rome appears to have been the subject of some serious betting among the young Catholic citizenry of Scotland. But it looks like a question of faith triumphing over form in some cases, with a number of pupils backing their local man.

Lesley Carroll, headteacher of Holy Rood High in Edinburgh, reports that Cardinal Keith O’Brien was warmly welcomed when he came to perform a blessing, shortly after his return from the Vatican.

Two pupils were overheard in the stairwell. Pupil one: “No, he’s no’ the Pope.”

Pupil two: “Aye, but he’s nearly.”
