Cross-sector contract;Newsround

No longer will schools and education authorities be swathed in red tape when children are placed into independent and non-maintained schools by their LEAs. A model contract, jointly developed by the National Association for Independent Schools and Non-Maintained Special Schools and the Local Government Association allows easier collaboration between the two sectors.

Welcomed by the Department for Education and Employment, the contract represents, according to NASS chief executive Rowie Shaw, "a strong willingness on behalf of the charitable sector to work closely with central and local government to provide an excellent education for pupils with special educational needs."

* Copies of the new contracts are available from NASS, 41 Durant Street, London E2 7BP.
