Parents of primary school pupils on the south side of Glasgow were amazed to find that their weans brought home a job offer with them last week. “Wanted! School Crossing Patrollers,” the notice cried.

The roads department wants full-time as well as part-time patrollers, a novel idea since lollipop persons are normally only required at the beginning, middle and end of the day. But perhaps Pounds 3.98 an hour to stand outside a school all day may well appeal to anyone looking for a regular job with no work for most of the day. Teachers?
