Cultish charm

The diary couldn't help but notice a growing note of desperation on The TES jobs pages in recent weeks. An ad for an English teacher to supervise the library and sixth-form centre at The Hundred of Hoo comprehensive, Medway, last week boasted: "the ultimate dream job". Why? Because the appointee would have: "No teaching. No marking!"

Meanwhile, if Stockton-on-Tees council rceives few responses to its appeal for two teachers, dare we suggest staff look again at the local authority slogan emblazoned across the bottom of the advert: "Local services for local people" and its scary similarity to the homicidal shopkeepers' motto in the cult TV comedy, The League of Gentlemen: "Local goods for local people." Surely an unfortunate coincidence?
