Cultural Education in England

Today, my independent review of Cultural Education in England is published by the Department for Education and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

It covers all areas of cultural education, including archaeology, architecture and the built environment, archives, craft, dance, design, digital arts, drama and theatre, film and cinemas, galleries, heritage, libraries, literature, live performance, museums, music, poetry and the visual arts.

One thing, that I’m in absolutely no doubt about, is the impact that great teachers and great teaching can have on a child’s engagement with cultural education. This should never be underestimated. Every day in schools across the country, life-changing moments happen for children because of the intervention of a dedicated teacher.

My recommendations include more support for newly qualified teachers in this area, as well as new opportunities for CPD for experienced teachers, allowing them to ensure that their skills remain relevant and up-to-date.

I know that many schools are already providing pupils with a high standard of cultural education, with excellent facilities and good teaching in art and design, design technology, music and the performing arts.

As part of the review, I’ve heard from teachers and headteachers from across the country about why Cultural Education is so important - both in and out of school. I hope that the recommendations I make will help to ensure that all children can and should benefit from receiving a wide-ranging, adventurous and creative cultural education.
