This is a useful background book in Spanish which explores briefly in fairly straightforward language different basic cultural, historic and social aspects of Spain. It would act as a complementary extra resource for A-level students, but much of it could be used with a good Year 11. There is a mine of statistical information on important subjects such as tourism, transport and communication; changes in commerce in recent years; health; education; political institutions. There are also chapters on art and culture, for example, on the Fiestas populares and the Cultural and Artistic Vanguard in Spain.

The book is beautifully illustrated with splendid photographs in colour and will provide valuable, up-to-date information on Spain for pupils and teachers.
