Vocation, vocation, vocation
The third annual VQ Day, which aims to raise the profile of vocational qualifications, will take place on June 23. More than 200 schools and colleges took part in last year’s VQ Day, holding events to promote vocational education. As well as the learner of the year prizes awarded in previous years, 2010 sees the launch of an industry insider prize. It recognises those studying for a career in the arts or entertainment industry. For details, and an action pack on how to take part, go to www.vqday.org.uk.
Apply yourself to applied learning
The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust is holding a conference on applied learning on July 7 and 8. The event, held at Sony UK in Weybridge, Surrey, will feature workshops, discussions and demonstrations of good practice by schools. The keynote speaker will be Professor Guy Claxton (pictured), co-director of the Centre for Real-World Learning at Winchester University. Bookings must be made by July 2. For details, go to www.ssatrust.org.uk.
Shining beacons of success
The closing date for applications for this year’s Beacon Awards is July 7. They recognise teaching initiatives in practical subjects and include a prize for practical teaching and learning, sponsored by the Edge Foundation, which promotes vocational education. Last year’s winner was West Cheshire College. The awards are run by the Association of Colleges. For details on how to apply, see www.aoc.co.uk.
