If you want to experience a piece of best value, old style, book a one-hour lesson for just pound;1.50 at Glasgow's Scotland Street School Museum.

For what must be the best value education per hour anywhere in Scotland, you can be terrified by a fierce teacher from the turn of the last century while sitting under her steely eye and pointer in wonderfully uncomfortable desks.

But private tutors of the present day - going rate pound;20 per hour - are less than happy. "They may be charging less, but they're ruining the job for the rest of us," said one.

"Hadn't they heard of McCrone in 1901?" asks a practitioner of the education black economy.
