Barrhead High’s famed uniform, winner of last year’s local government quality award, has been put to new educational uses. Our trading standards correspondent can reveal that one was borrowed for a spot of trader education prior to Guy Fawkes Day.

With trading standards officers and police in a car outside, a 22-year-old employee at East Renfrewshire Council was squeezed into one when she went into newsagents asking to buy fireworks. But they all refused to sell to this underage customer. A uniform approach, it might be said, mixing adult and school education with a spot of generational cross-dressing.
