Secondary school pupils have been “freeing their feet” to get teenagers walking.

Seven schools, including Branksome School and Carmel RC College, piloted the Step Up Free Your Feet walking challenge in Walk to School Month. Pupils had to record a week’s walking and the prize was an iPod nano.

“The number of secondary pupils being driven to school is rising,” said Tony Armstrong, of Living Streets, the charity that organised it. “A quarter of under-17s say they never walk for 20 minutes or more.” rv.
