The Diary’s attention has been drawn to a remarkable article by Chris Woodhead in the Mail on Sunday exploring the morbid subject of his own death.

“I would far prefer to be cremated and have my ashes scattered somewhere that has meant a great deal to me, such as Treen beach in west Cornwall,” the great man writes. “I would hate to be in an urn in someone’s sitting room - I think I should feel claustrophobic. My epitaph would be simple. I should like it to read: ‘He did what he could, given his limitations.’” Cheer up Chris, you’re only 55!
