In defence of unions

I should like to pay tribute to all our volunteers, who help colleagues in their own workplace or local area, backed by paid union staff. They are worth every penny of the facility time (when it’s available) or the union’s expenses. As an independent union that does not have a political fund, Voice has never been a “staunch supporter of Labour” (“A careful balancing act”, 18 May) or any political party, and our volunteers do not use facility or working time to engage in “political” activities.

Ian Toone, Senior professional officer (education), Voice: the union for education professionals.
