Months after Thomas Hamilton entered Dunblane primary school security remains a constant source of concern to parents and teachers.

Less horrifying, but still a serious worry is the level of theft and vandalism which costs schools millions of pounds a year in loss and damage. Schools are now looking at how to keep unwanted visitors out and yet encourage a sense of welcome to parents and those on legitimate business.

This vexed question has never been off the agenda for schools and now it looks likely to be a key issue for the indefinite future. Listed below are 20 ideas through which schools could improve their safety systems.
