“Scottish education is a basket case” - that is one subject for discussion at the annual conference of the Association for Media Edu-cation in Scotland, in Glasgow on May 18.

At “Media Education and the Democratic Intellect: Media Literacy in A Curriculum for Excellence”, keynote speakers Keir Bloomer, outgoing chief executive of Clackmannanshire Council, and Rick Instrell, freelance media education consultant, will explore the idea that ACfE will only succeed if there is a democratic revolution in the governance and management of Scottish education.

The programme will focus on media and moving image education, developments which will be explored through eight teacher workshops for primary and secondary: CGI animation; Empire of the Sun; “Learn to Listen” primary materials; media in S1-S3 English; media production; Oliver Twist as adaptation and musical; TV advertising; and Ugly Betty, left.
