Demons do not live in calculators;Letter

I SEE again that the humble calculator has been demonised; "they will be only introduced to seven to 11-year-olds and then only 'for calculations involving several digits'." (TES, June 4).

I am still surprised that thousands are spent on computers and yet the cheap four-function calculator is considered dangerous.

The suggestion that the calculator can only be used for many- digit numbers seems to ignore the opportunities offered for learning with a calculator and only reinforces the notion commonly held by children (and adults) that "calculators do it better".
