Teachers are not being properly trained to the necessary standard to teach physics, chemistry, biology and geography, according to a report by the National Advisory Board for Natural Sciences.

It said the Royal Danish School of Educational Studies, which offers qualified teachers supplementary training in different disciplines is too concerned with theory rather than subject content.

Pupils are being taught sciences by teachers who have not studied the subject since they were 15 or 16, according to Poul Thomsen, associate professor at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy at Aarhus University. A separate institution concerned with science subjects is recommended.
