The launch of a Department for Education and Employment initiative to promote foreign language learning in the primary sector was broadly welcomed by Peter Downes, president of the Association for Language Learning, with the proviso that care must be taken to ensure continuity between primary and secondary sectors.

Co-ordinated by CILT, the project’s objectives include the development of curriculum materials, a review of teacher training and the establishment of a network of practitioners. Fifteen to 20 projects will be selected to contribute to a Good Practice Project running from September 1999 until March 2001.
