Children of Dominica. By Frank Staub. Carolrhoda Books pound;9.99. 48pp. Pupil book for upper KS2, lower KS3.
The World’s Children series from which this book comes is published in the United States. The provenance is apparent, not just in a rather perplexed description of cricket, but also in a frankness about economic themes which British books often avoid. Various youngsters are seen at work with their parents; the relative affluence of those who rely on tourism and the more restricted prospects f those involved in agriculture are described in a straightforward manner. There are many attractive pictures of the island’s natural beauty, with its mysterious volcanic landscapes, as well as some heartening photographs of children relaxing, laughing and celebrating carnival.
