DFES fails to spend enough

The Department for Education and Skills still has pound;530 million in unspent cash available from last year.

In 20001, the then Department for Education and Employment failed to spend pound;1.44 billion of the money allocated to it by the Treasury. Almost a quarter of this total - pound;326m - was transferred to the Department of Work and Pensions which took over responsibility for employment after the general election. Responding to a question from Conservative MP John Bercow, Education Secretary Estelle Morris said that the remaining pound;584m had been allocated to her department this year.
