Drivers are used to a bit of boisterous behaviour on the school bus, but on one trip there was barely room for the children to move, let alone run riot.

When police stopped a bus taking children to school in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa, they found 49 children squashed into the 16-seat vehicle.

The pupils, aged from three to 13, were crammed on top of each other. Police had stopped the bus as part of a crackdown on illegal taxis ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

When they gave the driver a breath test, he turned out to be five times over the legal limit. And it was only breakfast time.
